“So much data. So little time. So little visibility.” We heard this a lot from attendees of RBMA’s annual meeting, PaRADigm. Our booth visitors explained that they are living in a paradox: there is ample data being captured, but they don’t have the tools to make productive use of it. The most often shared reasons: 1) data is captured at various points across systems that don’t talk to each other and 2) reports are limited in what they present, making it difficult to answer follow-up questions.
Disparate Systems
Total volumes, wait times, and staff productivity are among a sea of topics that have associated data points. While capturing data has become a common practice, the data itself may live across a variety of platforms like EHRs, RISs, or even amassed within a data warehouse. And that presents a series of problems. The first is that a user may not have access to all systems to get the data they need to make informed decisions. The second is that data from one system (e.g., volumes) may not align with data of another system (e.g., revenue). For example, having a visual format (or calculation) of one report can differ from another, and that makes it difficult to understand the relationship between them. The third is that a system may be limited in the type of data it can present, or it can be laborious to coordinate a variety of IT teams to introduce another data stream.
Having disparate systems means that data will be siloed, and people are asking for a way to see all their data – blended – in one single platform.
Limited Visibility
When people talk about a report, they’re usually referring to a static document; e.g., a spreadsheet, PDF, an email, etc. However, getting that report requires a fair amount of effort: a request is submitted (usually through a ticket), someone produces (or creates) it, and finally, time passes by (days or weeks) for its delivery. Even if the report is auto delivered via email, the recipient may still have questions; e.g., “Why are TATs getting worse?” or “How is *this* dip even possible?” The problem deepens when everyone receives the exact same report; people look for the data that specifically matters to them, and that takes time. And so begins the process of requesting another report to answer the next set of questions. Having static reports means that only surface-level questions are answered.
People want personalized reports that they can access themselves, in real time.
Overcoming the Challenges
“There has to be a better way to measure and manage.” And that’s what led to many of our booth conversations. Administrators and staff alike want relevant, personalized, and useful reports. And they want it right now – from one platform – because they’re short on time. They want the ability to drill down into their reports to see the next layer of data to prove its accuracy… and to answer their next set of questions. How do they do this? With a business operations platform. It blends clinical, financial, and operational data and presents it in real time through personalized, interactive reports. One system. One source of truth. One intuitive approach to accessing relevant data to make informed decisions.
